Introduction to Ashtanga

A place to begin, begin again, or review the fundamentals.

Ashtanga is a traditional, sequenced method of yoga that comes from Mysore, India, in the lineage of T. Krishnamacharya. The word means ‘eight limbs’ in Sanskrit and refers to the eight paths of yoga described in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras.

The movements can be adapted to each individual and are practiced in the same order each time. Once learned, the practice links breath with movement, becoming a moving meditation and a foundation for a practice of your own.

Introduction to Ashtanga workshop

Over 4 sessions, we will work through Primary Series at the pace of the group. No one is rushed, and how far we get depends on the participants. By the end of the workshop, students will feel prepared for a led Half Primary class. As a bonus, pre-paid workshop participants may attend Ashtanga Fundamentals on Thursday, November 19, from 9 to 10 a.m. at no charge. It covers much of the same material as the first workshop session on November 21.

This workshop is accessible to all, regardless of prior yoga experience or physical challenges.

  • Not flexible? Never practiced yoga? This workshop is for you.
  • Never practiced Ashtanga, or returning to it? Come as you are.
  • Can't make all sessions? Come when you are able. Prior material will be reviewed at the start of each session.
